Regulations and Working Groups governing Language Studies
Language instruction in Finnish universities of applied sciences is guided by legislation. Implementation of language instruction in universities of applied sciences is also guided by recommendations of various national working groups, such as the Development Group for UAS Language Instruction, set by the Rectors' Conference of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences. The aim of the recommendations issued by the Development Group is to support the quality work in UAS’s, to promote distribution of good practices in the implementation of language studies, and enhance comparison of studies at a national level.
These recommendations deal with e.g. markings in the degree certificate, assessment of the maturity test, skill level descriptions, entry level testing in Swedish and English, and principles for acknowledgment of earlier studies.
The legislation on UAS’s defines for example the language of the maturity test which is the same as the language of the student’s previous education. In addition, the required language skills set for public sector employees (especially Finnish and Swedish) are mentioned in the legislation. It is also commented, how this proficiency can be demonstrated.

Development Group for UAS Language Instruction was terminated in 2008. The work is continued by The Expert Team of Languages and Communication. (See http://extra.seamk.fi/arenektr/).
