Student Interview
Ariful IslamEducational backgroundBefore I came to Finland, I had studied for a Bachelors Degree in a University in my home country. After that, I applied to KyUAS to study International Business. When I got accepted to KyUAS, I just couldn´t miss the chance to come after the studies and now I´m here. I worked in an English Language Teaching school as a teacher of children. I used to teach English there. Study program, study sector?Right now, I am studying International Business. I started my studies in spring 2009 and my specialization is Marketing. Why did you choose this study sector? How did you choose KyUAS?Actually, There is no specific reason why I chose KyUAS. Before applying here, I just had the idea that the education system here is of a high standard. So, I searched for universities in admissions.fi and I found KyUAS there. Although it was a random selection, I think it was a wise decision to come to KyUAS. |
My name is Ariful Islam, I am 23 years old. I live in Utinkatu Kouvola. I am from Bangladesh. |
And the reason for the choice of my study field is that I had studied the same field in my previous university in my country. Moreover, I had an interest in studying Marketing in order to do some customer service related job in my career.
How does KyUAS differ from your earlier education units? What is especially good in KyUAS?
Obviously, KyUAS differs a lot from the other schools I have studied at. For example, if I compare it with the university that I studied in my country, there are so many things to be mentioned.
First of all, I would like to mention the concentration on theoretical and practical things. Because I have had a lot of chances here to do things practically after having contextual knowledge I could get the idea about how a project or task can be done in practical life. At the same time, I can distinguish between theoretical and practical knowledge. Another thing is the course curriculum. Here, the curriculums are more organized than those of my previous university.
Moreover, there are chances for pursuing hobbies if the students want to which I didn’t have in my previous university. One another important thing I would like to mention is the training opportunity. I have had many practical training opportunities here in KyUAS and I hink it is very important for each student to help them to build their career. That was also exceptional here compared to the university in which I have studied before.
How would you recommend your study sector to new applicants?
To the new applicants I would recommend KyAMK as place where they can learn all things with full potential and apply them in a professional way. The people who don’t find a consistency between their study and career plans should apply to our university. Here they will get their choice of field of study connected with their future plans.
Have you enjoyed studying and living in Finland? Do you like the city you´re living at?
At the very beginning, I was a little depressed about the weather and environment because the country that I come from is very hot and densely populated. However, there are very few people compared to my hometown. So, I started making a lot of friends and seeking places to have fun in. Now, I can say that I will miss Kouvola even if I travel for a week outside Finland. Quite unconsciously, I have fallen in love with the place. Maybe it is because of the nice people I have met here. I am trying hard to find a job so that I can stay here even after my graduation. I like the quality of life here.
What has been the best part of your study? What have you enjoy the most?
To me, the best part of my studies is the presentation that we had in a lot of courses. I think every marketing student should possess very good presentation skills. It gives confidence to the students to do the things professionally.
And what has been the most demanding part of the studies?
The most demanding part of my studies, I would say is my thesis. It is the final work which reflects a lot of things. What the students have learned through the whole degree influences their thesis.
Have you participated in any projects? What kind of projects would you be interested in?
Yes, I have participated two real projects already. The first was the promotion of LCCE program in our university and another was a customer satisfaction survey for Terpsikerho, a dance school located in Kouvola. It was a very nice experience to work with something real after having the academic knowledge on it.
How would you encourage people to become international?
To become truly international, I would suggest people try to make new friends every now and then. I would also recommend trying to know the people in order to distinguish the stereotypes from the reality. I would be very happy if I could go for an exchange to another country because I think it´s necessary to know the environment outside your borders. How things are done and also, how the cultural differences influence people.
Moreover, if you are a business student then it is even more important to have an idea about the differences in business types, people´s attitudes, future possibilities, etc. Right now, I am seeking a place outside Finland for my specialization training. I think the different experience of another business environment might give some new ideas or develop my thinking.
Your future plans?
As soon as I get a good place I will start working, of course. Right now, I am looking for a job in the marketing sector of a multinational company. Let´s see how far I can go. Since I love music a lot I like to sing songs. Therefore, after my graduation I would like to spend more time on music as well as my work. I want to do my masters degree as well, but I need work experiences for that. Therefore, I will think about it later.
Greetings to your fellow students
Come to KyUAS, enjoy studying here and build your career. I wish you all the best in all future endeavours.
