Student Interview – Katrin-Maria Terras

Katrin Maria Terras, 19 years, from Estonia.

Educational background I came to Finland straight after high school. I have no earlier degrees and my work experience consists of usual job in McDonald's. Study program, study sector? I study Design and I´ve specialized in Industrial Design.

Why did you choose this study sector? How did you choose KyUAS?

The thought just came by like fate, cause at first I wasn't even sure if I will study anywhere at all...

How does KyUAS differ from your earlier education units? What is especially good in KyUAS?

I haven´t studied in any other schools but I feel like this is just the perfect place for me by the educational system and by how much force it takes you in the beginning, but how fast you get used to that good system.

How would you recommend your study sector to new applicants?

I recommend it to people who would like to improve our living styles and to those to whom the things we use in everyday life are important instead of appreciating only working abilities and searching study program by how good job you will get in future or how much money it will bring to you.

Have you enjoyed studying and living in Kouvola?

I am a 4 years degree student, so I will complete the whole study programme here. I really enjoy the place I study even if it may not have a lot of places to visit but on the other side it helps you to concentrate on your studies.

What has been the best part of your study? What have you enjoy the most? I like working with my hands and not just learn the things in theory. I like to feel the material and try to imagine what we are creating. The best part right from the beginning of your studies is that you teach yourself to realize what you will do when you´ll enter the work life and you will learn to understand the whole design process and how things will be done in practice. It´s very important, because sometimes while studying there grows a feeling inside you that you know all right things in theory but you have no clue how to use them in practice.

Have you participated in any projects? What kind of projects would you you be interested in and what would you like to learn in them?

At the moment I am in a project where we design racks for Turku park but by other projects I would like to learn how to work with a single customer with personal wishes instead of a group of people.

How would you encourage people to become international?

 It helps you to know more about people and it helps you to be more open. The main problem why people doesn´t speak other languages is very often that they are afraid to be misunderstood or hear other people laugh at them because of their accent or other spelling mistakes. We are living in a huge world with so many different people and if we create something, we don´t create it just for one human or country, its for all of us.

Your future plans?

I really would like to design things. If it will be possible I would like to become an artist who makes installations connected for example to politics or to subjects and problems that people are used to just scip in their lifes... I´ve just started my studies so it´s difficult to say now if I continue my studies later. I believe time will show. About work situation I don´t have a clue cause I haven´t checked that yet.

Greetings to your fellow students

I would like to encourage people not to be afraid to go to such places of which you may sometimes know nothing about beforehand. Do not be afraid to communicate and do not hide your own thoughts and ideas, cause there is no right or wrong solutions - sometimes it´s just all about your idea, sometimes some others´ idea. It´s not dangerous...
Everything will develop in good way after it will be uttered in the presentations and afterwards you will not only know it – you will also feel that it´s your creation that gives something to discuss about.
