"My name is Olga Nayanova, I’m 18 years old, and at present I live in Kouvola, in student’s residence. I’m from Russia, Saint Petersburg." |
Educational background
I didn’t have any specific educational background before applying to Kymenlaakso UAS. I entered the university straight after finishing my high school in Russia. However, I have finished an art school 3 years ago back in Saint Petersburg.
Study program, study sector?
At Kymenlaakso UAS I study Design in English. The official name of the Degree Programme is the Degree Programme in Design in English. I will graduate in 2013.
Why did you choose this study sector? How did you choose KyUAS?
I always wanted to get my higher education abroad. When I found out that KyUAS had design programmes in English, I didn’t doubt anymore where to study. I chose design as the major field of studies due to the fact that I was always more or less interested in painting, drawing and creating something new. Thus, my choice of the field was definitive.
How does KyUAS differ from your earlier education units? What is especially good in KyUAS?
I don’t have enough of experience to talk about the differences. However, I’ll say that KyUAS allows you to be creative and doesn’t limit you a lot which I find it quite valuable. At the art school in Russia the system of education was stricter; we had to follow a ready fixed pattern which was sometimes annoying in such creative fields as design or arts.
Furthermore, I do love that in KyUAS it is possible to try your abilities in different fields of design such as spatial, industrial and product design, graphic or fashion design and then choose the one that best suits for your skills and talents.
How would you recommend your study sector to new applicants?
I would recommend it to those who are interested in arts and design and to those who want to develop their skills in these fields but who haven’t decided yet what specialization to choose.
Have you enjoyed studying and living in Kouvola?
I do like Kouvola and Finland. Although at first I was quite confused by the small size of Kouvola, especially in comparison with Saint Petersburg, now I find it quite beneficial: I spend almost no time at all on moving from one place to another within the town, I like the greenery around me and the closeness to the nature and finally, the life is not so stressful here.
What has been the best part of your study? What have you enjoy the most?
I hope that the best is yet to come. However, during the last year I enjoyed accomplishing some tasks in workshops and it is always great when you can incarnate your ideas, drawings and sketches in a real 3D form and actually see them in three dimensions.
And what was the most demanding part of the studies?
It has probably been the organization and management of my time so that I have all tasks accomplished by the deadline.
Have you participated in any projects? What kind of projects would you you be interested in and what would you like to learn in them?
No, I haven’t participated in any projects so far. Nevertheless, I do hope that this year I will have an opportunity to participate in a competition just to get some experience or in some real project if our school manages to find a company interested in collaborating with students as the part of our product design course.
How would you encourage people to become international?
Well, I think it’s evident that nowadays it’s crucial to actively participate in the internalization and all sorts of cultural exchange. Personally I would love to go on exchange the next year to learn about a new country, the mentality of the another nation as well as its culture.
To stay international and open-minded it is essential to learn languages and it´s just so much fun! Whenever you start learning a new language, you meet so many great people and you get acquaintances from all over the world what might be quite useful afterwards.
Your future plans?
Hopefully I´ll start working if I manage to find a good practical training. I can’t tell you what my dream job might be because I haven’t defined yet in which particular field I would like to study and work on.
Concerning the work situation I actually have no idea yet. However, I hope that nowadays when the level of standard of living has gotten quite high more and more people and companies will realize the importance of design so that there will be no problem in finding a placement.
It´s more likely that after getting the Bachelor Degree I will continue my studies to obtain a Master Degree.
Greetings to your fellow students
I do recommend KyUAS to everyone who is interested in design because KyUAS does care about the welfare and education of its students. So why to miss a chance of getting the affordable education in one of the most developed European countries? ;)
